[Data Science Case] Detection of Overhead Wire Anomalies Using Deep Learning

Examples of data science utilization in the construction and social infrastructure sector! Case study on improving inspection efficiency.

We will introduce a case study of improvement in abnormal detection of overhead wires using deep learning. At Tokyo Electric Power Grid, the inspection and maintenance of overhead wires involved humans visually identifying abnormalities from aerial footage. The visual inspection process required the aerial video to be played back at one-tenth speed for manual checking, which was very costly and also had issues with accuracy due to potential oversights leading to missed detections. To address this, a model was developed using deep learning to determine abnormalities and normal conditions from image data. By quantifying and visualizing the "abnormality" of the overhead wires, AI was able to identify areas that required human visual confirmation, thereby achieving a reduction in the costs associated with visual inspections.

[Data Science Case] Stabilization of Quality and Variation Factor Analysis by AI

I want to lead to improvements in manufacturing conditions! A case of developing a model to predict variations in inspection results.

We would like to introduce a case study in the manufacturing industry that enabled the stabilization of product quality and analysis of variability factors through AI. In the quality inspection tests for drive system products, there was a challenge to analyze the variability factors of inspection results using the data obtained from the tests, with the aim of improving manufacturing conditions and other aspects. To address this, we developed a model to predict the variability of inspection results using measurement conditions of the quality inspection tests, design information of the manufactured products, and dimensions of components as features. The package designed for use in the work environment differs from those intended for other scientific investigations by employing a tablet PC for device control. The dedicated application features an interactive device setup, allowing for intuitive use. Once data measurement is conducted, a statistically and visually comprehensible report can be generated with just a few taps. Attaching the device to the worker is also simple; it can be securely fixed using a dedicated strap that allows for the soft and firm attachment of a motion sensor the size of a matchbox, without the need for a specialized suit. For those primarily engaged in stationary tasks, a version with 9 sensors for the upper body is used, while a full-body version with 15 sensors is utilized for tasks involving movement or lifting objects from ground level. Once accustomed to the setup, the full-body version can be prepared in about 5 minutes, enabling immediate assessment of the worker and the work environment. By comparing data for each worker, it is possible to identify differences and risks between experienced workers and newcomers, as well as to statistically analyze data from multiple workers in the same workplace to assess the risks present in that environment.
